What do all these people have in common????
They're Jewish and they're proud.

Woobury J.C. is proud of our Jewish Youth Groups. You can still join us! Our youth group - grades 8 through 12 (USY). All of our groups meet weekly.

USY is an international youth groups which also have events outside the synagogue such as dances, kinnusim (weekend retreats for USY), shabbatonim (weekend retreats for Kadima), trips, sports events, interchapter events and much, much more. We're here to bring exciting, fun-filled programs to you. But we can't do it alone...

USY is not just meetings in the temple…it is so much more! It is an opportunity to take a break from school and home. We combine with other united youth on Long Island for bowling, dancing, and partying. We will go on conventions and have events with high school students from all over New York. Each year there are International Conventions where you have the opportunity to meet others from all over the country. USY has camps such as teen travel, which go across the United States and opportunities to explore areas throughout the world! So come out to a meeting and see how great this year will be.

This time of year, January and February, is always my least favorite season. I’m basically done with winter after December, since I hate the cold and winter gloom. I also hate that this time of year is the longest gap in the whole school year between vacations. But fortunately WoodUSY, the high school aged youth group at the WJC, can help all Jewish teens combat the gloominess as winter ends.

The first USY event in January will be a divisional New Year Dance in the evening on Saturday, January 3rd. Though the division has not yet determined where the dance will be, it’s sure to be a great way to celebrate 2009 with teens from all over eastern Nassau and Suffolk counties. For more information on our division, Rakevet, take a look at http://www.uscj.org/metny/rakevet.

On Sunday, January 11th, from 7:00-9:00 p.m., we’ll be having a WoodUSY murder mystery night, where the USYers will act out and solve a crime in the youth lounge of the WJC! The more the USYers participate, the more fun we’ll have. Then on Thursday, the 15th, also from 7:00-9:00 p.m., we are going to have WoodUSY movie night. There will be no fee for this event. These events are taking place because the WoodUSY board, made up of six high school students, chose programs they knew they would be interested in attending, and that they believed would appeal to their peers as well. This kind of peer leadership is a strength of WoodUSY, and indeed, USY in general.

Another exciting thing happening at WoodUSY is the 613 Mitzvah Corps, the USY community service club. On Sunday, January 25th in the afternoon we will be volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park. This wonderful organization provides families of seriously ill children with a home-away-from-home so they can be near their sick children at Schneider Children's Hospital. USYers who attend this event will be awarded community service hours.

Though the February calendar is still in progress, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention an exciting opportunity for paid WoodUSY members at the beginning of February. From the 6th to the 8th our region of USY, METNY, is hosting its annual Midwinter Kallah at the Holiday Inn in Suffern. This event will cost $199, and is worth every penny in the friendships to be made and experiences to be had with METNY. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me at WoodburyUSY@gmail.com or take a look at the websites I suggest above.

It made be cold outside, but it’s warm with WoodUSY!

Loen Amer
USY Director
